Consultative Ballot – National Pay Claim

The Local Government Employers have made a final offer for 2013-14. We are now seeking your view on their offer:

1% increase on all spinal points

Deletion of the bottom pay point - spinal point 4 — from October 2013.

We believe this pay offer is insulting to our members and works out to be an increase of just pennies per hour.

The current offer amounts to another cut in real pay; living costs are on the rise food, transport and energy costs are running high at 3.3% The current inflation rate is 2.8%.

After 3 years of pay freezes, your basic earnings have dropped by 16% in real terms.

Cuts to council tax benefits and housing benefits mean many of our members are being squeezed even tighter. This increase does not even come close to closing the deficit. Many members are being forced to cut spending on healthcare, such as prescriptions, dentists and opticians.

Southwark branch committee unanimously voted to recommend and call upon members to support sustained all-out strike action in pursuit of an improved offer.

Even if we only achieve a moderate increase on 1%, this will affect all subsequent pay rises and pension payments. Settling for 1% now will affect our income for the rest of our lives!

Strike action will involve some sacrifice. The real question to ask is: Can you afford not to?

Please return the ballot paper to the branch office by e-mail or post to the branch office – details above – by 5pm on Tuesday June 4 2013.
